What to check before you choose storage

• NVMe (M.2) or SATA

  NVMe drives plug directly into an M.2 slot and are much faster than SATA drives. SATA SSDs still make sense as an inexpensive secondary drive when the board has spare SATA ports.

• M.2 slots and PCIe generation

  The motherboard and CPU decide how many M.2 slots you have and which PCIe generation they run at. A faster drive on a slower slot simply runs at the slot's speed.

• Capacity

  Modern games can be very large, so many buyers choose 1TB or more. In M1's completed builds, one adds a second M.2 drive alongside its main one.

• Heat

  Fast NVMe drives can get warm under sustained load. Many boards include M.2 heatsinks, and good case airflow helps.

What to tell M1 when you request SSD / Storage pricing

These are the questions the quote form asks for this category. Most are optional and several offer a “not sure” answer, but the more you share, the closer the first quotation will be.

• Storage type

  NVMe M.2 SSD, SATA SSD, HDD or not sure. It decides which connector the drive uses and how fast it can be.

• Capacity

  From 500GB to 8TB or more. Think about your game library and whether this is a main drive or extra space.

• Preferred performance

  Best value, high performance or maximum performance. The fastest drives only help if the board's M.2 slot can use them.

• Device / motherboard model

  Shows how many M.2 slots and SATA ports are free, and the PCIe generation of the slot.
